What are we supposed to do with all this poisonous stuff?” Toney asked.

“Throw it in the Trash” said a San Man

Page.163

How dumb does this make this San Man Look? At first I took this quote to ask the question “ should it be law for all San Men to know how to properly dispose of all goods?” But rather now I am going to use this quote to show how un-educated most of the United States is about recycling.  Recycling is a word from the new age but how much longer can we wait until everyone starts doing it. This earth is beautiful and it is up for humans living in it to keep it this way.  Years from now who knows the earth might even be gone but I want to make sure that my kids are able to see the country’s greenery before everything is just turned into landfills. Everyone as a whole needs; I beg you, begin to recycle. We need to reduce our carbon footprint.

“We’re dealing with storm runoff, with oil based materials, mercury from car switches, appliances, anything. We’ve got PCBs, Freon, paints. We recycle ten year old cars, which contain stuff since been outlawed”

Page.143

This may sound like this statement is educating but rather the person stating it was just un-educated. By advertizing that they are recycling goods that no longer are recyclable this should be shut down. Is it right to break the law to make money? But rather a deeper question is it morally right to recycle chemicals that do harm to the environment knowing you could of done something to stop it. People don’t realize how bad these chemicals are and how they are found in everyday items that you use on an everyday basic. I have had much experience with Freon, and mercury. Freon is found in most every air conditions, freezer, and refrigerators.  My experience consists of sucking the Freon out of the brass coils located in the back of each machine. We were told to tap the brass lines with a metal tap bit, then sucked out the Freon using a small hose and machine that collected the Freon. Mercury came into play when working in the light Barn. The barn was used to store old light bulbs, this might not seem like a process but it is when you are talking about thousands of light bulbs that you have to box, shelf then load into a truck eventually after the room fills up. Mercury is released from each light bulb that is broken. This barn comes standard with a mercury detector and collection system.

“You can get some pretty neat stuff with these,” Toro said. “I once got a camera”

Page.130

Toro the Garbage man said this while he was explaining what kind of mongo he finds out on the root on a daily. Mongo is defined as items that people throw away but are still in a useable or at least repairable state. Most San Man has a niche of items that they look for. Mongo can be anything from old magazines, to wedding rings, to even bank moneybags filled with money. San Man say that mongo is a main benefit other then the control of setting your own hours.  This is the type of job you need to enjoy to like for all the wrong reasons. Last summer I worked at the solid waste management district where I worked an eight-hour day there.  While working we did two things; paper line, and comingle line. These lines consisted of conveyer belts that run while we sort threw either paper, cardboard, and trash. While the other line was all cans bottles and trash. We needed to short these different items into there individual bins. We would do this for hours at time, this is a very time consuming job, the amount of recyclable that you are able to sort threw is endless. By the time we knocked down one huge 15-foot pile of paper we would already have 3 more loads waiting. Cans, Bottles, and Trash will be around forever. When they are gone I hope all human life is gone. But it is time for us to start to reduce our output of trash today so that we are able to live for the future.

“The economics of composting are challenging.” said Tom Outerbridge

Page.114

The economics of composting are challenging a quote said by Tom Outerbridge. Composting is defined as:                        I have had a compost bin at my grandma’s house for the longest time. She bought it way back in the day when she wanted to explain how we could take garbage that we normally would of thrown into the garbage could be reduced by throwing it into the compost bin. My brother and I would throw all food waste, leaves, cardboard, and other random compos able goods. Often my grandma would make me stir up the waste and also water it. This helped speed up the composting process. The dirt that we got from the bin was the most ferial dirt I’ve every seen, very rich soil. Worms also were what helped speed up the compost process. Sometimes we would dig threw the ground and looked everywhere for worms then we would put them into the bin. I can remember many times we would find up to 50 worms. The dirt we got we normally used as top solid for our vegetable garden the amount of dirt was not a lot but the great part of the composting process is once the dirt is used instantly more dirt is being produced. This is a great way to reduce trash, but also save money but not having to purchase topsoil. Most food waste is the heavy wet stuff that takes up most of the room in your garbage; by composting you could cut your waste in half.  Composting is challenging but it is also as easy as putting compos able goods in a bin and simply waiting. All the little things we can do to reduce waste we must now, because years from now we will not have the choice to.

“We finally got the land fill up to code, except for the liner, and then they closed it.”

Said Chief Diggins

Page.86

Chief Digging said this during a tour of his landfill, the question is does this quote make since. Digggings clearly states that the landfill is up to code then seconds latter states everything is up to code except the liner. Common knowledge of landfills that by law need liners: The liner is the only thing keeping pollutants from the garbage in the landfill from seeping into the ground. With out the correct liner and cap this landfill is polluting to the ground, air and everything around. The liquid that gets put out will get vaporized up into the sky and then reduced back into the environment though acid rain; this is a negative effect not only for humans but also for animals and the plant in general. By closing the landfill that is not up to code should be illegal. Not only should it be illegal but also that landfill should have never been officially closed until the liner was up to code. This shows the double negative effect in every aspect. Sure its wonderful there was a land fill where you could trash your garbage rather then throwing it in the woods or on side of the roads but now your garbage is in a leaking landfill, leaking thousands of chemicals and toxicants’ into the air and water.  Many landfill are built around waterways such as rivers, swamps, lakes, and even streams. Leaking landfills will pollute the water effecting humans and also the animals that drink that water. If we had a choice why didn’t we build landfill where you know 100 % that no water could ever be polluted.

“They may arrange a tour for a class of third-graders, but they’re not going to let a writer in” said Al Wurth

Page.68

This was said when the author of the book was denied access of a waste station. She was not happy to know that people without any knowledge of garbage could tour the facility, and to know your there to do nothing but try to educate and make this earth the most environmentally correct as possible.  Al Wurth was open to tour at first but then suddenly changed his mind. The reason for the denied access was believed because of improper maintenance of landfills, latter to find out nothing was actually wrong. I believe that these landfills should be open to anyone who wants to see how garbage is impacting the environment. The amount of garbage that could be being recycling is just simply being thrown under our earth. Landfills take up lots of space, can put of many pollutants if not tended to correctly; both air and water, and also are reminders for people that they do not have to recycle.  If you don’t know what a land fill is it is basically a large half egg shaped hole in the ground consisting of a liner with layers of garbage and dirt. All of this is caped with a cover. Landfills give off more than gases pollutants, but these pollutants if maintained corrected should be collected in a methane collection system and burnt with a flare that continuously stays lit. When the flame goes out there will soon to be big problems, because the methane starts collecting at the base of the landfill this is a bomb waiting to go off. Most collection systems come standard with a telephone system where if the flame goes out it calls the nearest person to go re light the flame. The landfill I’m most familiar to in Brattleboro, VT is just getting that technology now. Scary to think of all the times that flame could have gone out in the past.

Chapter Two Blog

“Nitrogen and Phosphorous are essential nutrients, though they can also be contaminants” he said. “But the net effect seems to be beneficial. Our spartina’s growth exceeds or is equal to growth in a natural marsh” said Anderson

Page.60

Anderson said this while he was explaining the landfill process. In this quote he says that Nitrogen and Phosphorous are key essentials to making a landfill work but for every positive brings a negative.  Anderson does not seem so sure about the positives being more effective then the negative of having those dangerous chemicals.  The pollution of Nitrogen and Phosphorous, in this case are being released by humans in order to dispose of the garbage in the landfill. I find this to be demeaning. Most people consider recycling a good thing but pollutants in the air are not good things. In order to reduce the chemical pollution as a society we need to start thinking of other ways to recycle that don’t have cause a double negative to the environment. This leads me to incineration, the process of burning garbage at high temperatures so the garbage intenerates as soon as the incinerator is turned on. This does reduce the amount of air pollution but does not complete get rid on them. Zero emission cars, and zero pollution is the next generation where we need to go if we want this earth to be around for our children’s grandchildren. It is time for society to make a change.

“Gotta make a Change,

Its time for us as a people to start making some changes,

Lets change the way we eat,

Lets change the way we live,

And lets change the way we treat each other.

See the old way wasn’t working so its on us to do what we got to do to survive.” – 2pac

“You feel it in your legs, your back, your shoulders” Murphy Told me

 Page.33

Murphy the San Man said this while he was explaining how tuff a San Mans job really is. Most people don’t realize how much a San Man lifts per day. Think about it, each one of your trash cans weigh up to around 15 to 20 pounds each. San man has over 100’s of stops where they are lifting garbage cans and recyclable boxes all day. That is a lot of lifting when their job is constant everyday no stops. The harder a San Man works will show the inner work ethics in that individual. When every site is picked up the San Mans job is over that is why you always see them working hard because they are going to get paid the same if they hustle and get work done, or slack and take all day. This also makes most San Man able to have two jobs most work hard in the morning then break and head off to their next job.  Most San Man enjoy their job. The best benefits of this job they say is the mongo. Mongo is useable trash such as car parts, old stoves, and everything that can be possibly repairable.  Mongo makes great gifts. Sure toys get old but what is the point of throwing them away where you can give them to another family to enjoy. On that note, Swap Shops. Swap shops are set up at your local transfer station where if you have a reusable item rather then throwing it away you place it on a shelf where anyone can look and take what ever they want. The items that they don’t give away will be recycled after. This is just one other way we can recycle. After reading this I hope you refer to these swap shops to trash useable goods. I have collected many things that I have been able to reuse in the past.

A Friend In need-

I have always been there for all of my friends no matter what, and I always will be.  No matter what the problem is I have made it clear to my friends and peers that I will talk to them about their problems. I will always listen to what people have to say, and I will always respect what they have to say also. Everyone has problems and everyone has their different ways of dealing with them. Most of my friends don’t have real hard situations to talk about but we do discuss girl problems, family problems, and other personal problems we just don’t feel like talking to anyone else about. My brother was in need of love the day my grandpa died. Not to sound all mushy but I think I showed my brother the most love I ever had that day for him just so I could rest easy knowing I did everything in my power to make my brother happy. I have also been there for my best friend every time he crashed his dirt bike many times carrying him out of the woods with blood gushing out of his leg. My friends are my life, and will always be there for them.

Being Made a Fool of-

I have never had a moment of my life I have been made a fool off but I have had a situation in my life where I know that some one acted like a fool and wish we could go back and change it. It was about 2 years ago when my great aunt died. My great aunt and great uncle where they’re for each other everyday of their life’s since they got into each others. My great aunt was basically blind, and my great uncle was basically blind. He was her eye, and she was his ear. They spent over half of their lives together. When my aunt died my uncle was heart broken. The night before my great aunts funeral my uncle was so mean to my great uncle and caused a great amount of stress. My great uncle yelled and asked to get driven home. That next morning I woke up to a phone call saying that my great uncle died of a heart attack. I will go to my grave saying that the cause of my great uncles death was because of my uncle. But at the funeral the priest said the reason for his death was because of his broken heart. He wore his wedding clothing during their double funeral they had together.
